What is Day Of Action?

Day of Action is a region‑wide United Way movement that brings people together to create meaningful, local change. Each year, United Ways across the globe mobilize volunteers on June 25th to strengthen communities, support local solutions, and advance opportunities for all.

Here in Northwest Illinois, Day of Action is our moment to unite neighbors, workplaces, and community partners around projects that make our region stronger — one act of service at a time.

Why it matters?

Day of Action is more than a volunteer event — it’s a global movement powered by people who believe in building stronger communities. United Way Worldwide launched Day of Action in 2008 as a coordinated, network‑wide effort to mobilize volunteers, inspire new supporters, and highlight the work United Way does all year long.

Today, hundreds of United Ways across multiple countries participate, engaging volunteers in projects as diverse as the communities they serve. United Way partners with global corporations, local businesses, nonprofits, and civic groups to create opportunities for employees and neighbors to give back where they live and work.

  • Community Resiliency — Day of Action strengthens local resiliency by mobilizing volunteers to support projects that improve health, safety, and stability across neighborhoods.
  • Youth Opportunity — Volunteers help expand opportunities for young people by supporting literacy, mentoring, enrichment, and safe community spaces.
  • Healthy Community — Service projects like food packing, community clean‑ups, and wellness support activities help ensure families have access to healthier, more vibrant environments.
  • Financial Security — By assisting nonprofits and community partners, volunteers help expand access to essential resources that support family stability and long‑term economic well‑being.

How it works?

United Way of Northwest Illinois coordinates volunteers from across Stephenson, Jo Daviess, and Carroll Counties and places them with local nonprofits, schools, municipalities, and community organizations that request help.

What partners do Local businesses, agencies, and community groups submit project requests — anything from landscaping and painting to organizing, assembling kits, or supporting community spaces.

What volunteers do Volunteers sign up to serve on June 25th and are matched with projects that meet real community needs. One day of service creates a ripple effect of impact across the entire region.
